Getting Ready For The Season!

Man, I feel like I’m so behind! At least we’re just playing Spring Training games, but still. Anyways, things have been going GREAT!! I love the way the team is playing right now and it’s sooo cool to see.

I was listening to the game the other day and the guys were talking about how the young guys don’t worry about “saving” for the regular season. Like some old guys worry about saving all their hits for the regular season, but the young guys are just full of it. They’re taking advantage of every situation they get.

Take Will Venable. He’s been on fire, as far as Spring Training fire goes. He’s got four hits so far, including a three-run homer, a double, and a triple. He’s scored four runs and driven in three. Pretty amazing stuff.

willvene.jpgOn Wednesday, we were split-squad: one game against the Indians and one against the Brewers. We won the Brewers game, 5-4, but we lost to the Indians, 10-5.

The Brewers game was really good. That’s the one where Will hit his three-runner. Logan Forsythe drove in two runs with a double.

Mat Latos threw three innings in that game and didn’t give up a run. Good sign.

matylatos.jpgIn the other game, Wade LeBlanc threw three innings, allowing only one run on four hits. Aaron Poreda, though, didn’t even get an out as he allowed seven runs on three hits with three walks. Grady Sizemore hit a grand slam. Ugh.

wadethrowing.jpgOn Thursday, we played the Cubs. Jon Garland started, but he struggled, giving up four runs in 1.2 innings. That’s okay, though. It’s early, and every pitcher is expected to have a bad outing here and there.

We did really well on the offensive side! We were down 8-0 going into the bottom of the 7th. We got one run in the bottom of the seventh, then we got three runs in each of the eighth and ninth. Isn’t that great? Of course, it’s kind of sad that we weren’t able to get just one more run, but that’s okay. We rallied back really well.

I’m soooo thrilled with this team right now, even if we’re like 2-6. I’m seeing things that really matter on this team. Defense, baserunning, determination, perseverance, agressiveness. The attitude around this team is completely different than anything I’ve felt from them before. I honestly don’t know what this team is going to do this season, but I can tell you this: things are different. There’s a buzz in the air. There’s a spark to this team that I’ve never seen before. And I think it’s going to be an amazing season.

Kouz hit a homer a few days ago. GO KOUZ!!

Brian Giles retired yesterday. It’s kind of weird. I mean, he was very good when he played for us and everything, but I think it definitely was time for him to retire.

We’re playing the Rangers in a few minutes. Clayton Richard is starting, so that will be cool.

Lookin’ Good

On Saturday we lost 7-4. Jerry Hairston had three hits, though, which is super cool. Jon Garland pitched really well. He went two innings, only allowing one run on two hits. Definitely good to see. On Sunday, the game got rained out.

Yesterday I turned on the radio at about 12:45 and checked XX 1090 to see if the game was going. All I heard was Darren Smith, so I assumed that the game had been rained out again. I’m so stupid. Actually, the radio stations are being stupid. I had completely forgotten that they’re going to be broadcasting most of the games on 1700! That’s really annoying ’cause 1090 was coming in bad enough, and I wonder if I’ll be able to hear the games at all on 1700. Sigh. They’d better keep all the regular season games on 1090, and even better, go back to 105.7. Oh well.

Anyways, so we did play yesterday, even though I didn’t hear it. We played the Rockies and lost 5-4, though we did pretty well. K-Cor started, allowing two runs over three innings. Clayton Richard and Heath Bell had scoreless innings, but Cesar Ramos allowed three runs in his inning.

kcorspring.jpgWe did pretty well on the offensive side. Adrian got a hit. Whew. I was getting a little worried there.

And look at Chase…that guy’s on fire! He hit a home run yesterday, so now he has two hits so far with three RBIs. Chad Huffman had a two-run double. Matt Antonelli also had an RBI double.

chasehomer.jpgWe’re playing the Angels in Tempe today. Chris Young’s going to pitch again, so that’ll be cool.

So how does this team look so far? We’re 1-3, but that doesn’t matter a bit. So far, I’m really liking the defense, the baserunning, and the pitching. Our pitchers haven’t been perfect, but they’re doing very well. Things are looking goooood.

In other news, the A’s lost 10-3 to the Cubs, but Kouz still doesn’t have a hit. I know you can do it KOOOOZ!!!!! Miss you!!!!

GO PADRES!!!

First Win Of The Season!!

Our boys pulled off a great win yesterday. You know that thing I was saying about how opposing pitchers always seem to be on their game when they’re against us? Well, turns out I was wrong. Yesterday, there were two guys on the Mariners that didn’t have it together at all.

Mat Latos was good in his first start of the spring. He went two innings, allowing one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout. He was actually really sharp.

So we were down 1-0 when we went into the top of the third. We got like five walks and a few hits to drive in eight runs. Yeah, eight. I was so thrilled. It was so cool to hear the boys really taking advantage of the situation and scoring some runs. That was a very fun inning to listen to.

nickybud.jpgSpeaking of listening, I was sooooo excited when the broadcast started. I was like, I can’t believe this is actually happening!!! Oh man. It was so great to hear that first pitch to Everth Cabrera.

Anyways, we did really, really well. I was very pleased with the way we played. Gallagher, Poreda, and Italiano pitched perfectly. I think things are really coming together.

Who I am kidding? It’s only the first game of the spring! :)

Well, the Atheltics played yesterday too, and guess what? Kouz played! He had three ABs but no hits. It’s just good that he’s playing again. MISS YOU KOUZ!!!

oaklandkouz.jpgWe’re playing the Mariners again in about twenty minutes. Jon Garland is going to start!

GO PADRES!!!

Starting Off With a Loss!

Oh my goodness, it’s so great to back into writing about an actual game. Whew. I can’t believe we finally made it!

Today was the charity game against the Mariners, which we lost 9-3. A couple of observations right out of the gate: 1) I forgot how much I hate losing. And I always run into this problem in Spring Training too even though these games don’t matter. I mean, I am really frustrated that we lost this game. I don’t know, even though they don’t matter, these games still seem to have implications for the regular season.

2) Along those same lines, I hate Spring Training because I always thought that the pitchers were supposed to be trying to get on their game, so they’re not on top of their game, yet. But every single year, our pitchers are certainly not on top of their game, but it always seems like the opposing pitchers are having no problems at all. Which leads me to think that even if the opposing pitchers are not on top of their game yet, it must mean that our hitters stink. So, in summary, Spring Training games really tick me off. And I know, I’m really, really reading too much into this.

Postives? Chris Young had a good outing, an inning with three hits and a run and a walk allowed. Did get two strikeouts though, so that puts his ERA at 9.00 even. Sweet.

Heath Bell allowed a run, and this Radhames Liz guy allowed six. Nice.

Matt Stairs hit a home run, and Kyle Blanks got two hits. Jerry Hairston got a hit and scored a run.

Okay, so it wasn’t too bad for a game that doesn’t even count. And it is baseball, after all. That’s something to be excited about. But I want to see our guys getting some more hits and scoring some more runs. I hate losing.

Speaking of which, the Oakland Athetics also lost 9-3. Kouz didn’t play, so I guess he’s still hurting. Poor baby :( Get well soon!!

I can’t wait to hear tomorrow’s game live! It’s going to be so great!

Spring Training Countdown: 2 DAYS!!!!!

Wow, I’m getting super excited about the big game. It’s really going to be so great to hear Padres baseball. Things are definitely going to be different, but it’s going to be good.

I watched a bunch of the videos from the Padres Spring Training this morning, and I’m really excited about all our players. Like, I kind of forgot that we even had Chase Headley still on the team! I guess that in all the Kouz drama I forgot who was going to replace him. Chase’s got this great beard going. He’s looking good.

I’m really excited about all the players. These are my boys! Nick, Adrian, Eck, Everth, Chase, Blanksie, T.Gwynn, Will, Scotty and Jerry. CY and K.Cor and Mat and Clayton. Heath, Adams, Thatcher (even though he frustrates me like crazy), Mujica, all of them. These are my boys, and I can’t wait to see them out on that field!

The Oakland Athletics had an intrasquad game yesterday, but my dear Kouz didn’t play because he has a bruised right shin. UH OH!!! Get well soon Koozie!!!! He’ll probably play in the A’s opening game tomorrow, though.

That brings me to the matter of Kouz’s former number with the Padres. Guess where it ended up this year? Yeah, that’s right. Randy Ready, the hitting coach, is wearing the sacred number #5! What is up with that? That number needs to be retired or something. Don’t just go give it to the hitting coach! Goodness.

I’m sure a lot of you have heard about the situation with Chelsea King this weekend. She disappeared on Thursday night, and a body was found yesterday that is very likely her’s. If you want to read more of the story, just do a Google search, but please, be praying for the King family in this devistating time. This has really hit home for a lot of people, because she was only 17 years old. Please pray for the family in this horrible time. It’s times like these that make baseball look like such a trivial thing.

Spring Training Countdown: 8 Days!!!! (Plus a Rant!)

Guess who’s wearing #8 right now? Kyle Blanks! What a coincidence. Here I was going to talk about our center field situation, and an outfielder is wearing number eight. Anyways.

I kind of talked about it yesterday, but I think that Scotty Hairston and Tony Gwynn are going to be the main guys in center field. Who’s going to be starting Opening Day? Probably Tony Gwynn. But you never know.

Yay for only EIGHT more days!! It’s officially one week until the charity game, by the way. I bet the guys are super excited.

Now I need to talk about Adrian Gonzalez. He’s seriously breaking San Diego’s hearts. I mean, it was bad enough that the Chargers released LaDainian Tomlinson a couple days ago.

ladainian tomlinson.jpgWe are going to miss you so much, LT. Thanks for all the memories and the amazing years of being a Charger.

I hate it when this happens to San Diego sports teams. The Chargers released him. They dumped him, kicked him off the team. They didn’t want him anymore. And that’s really hard on the fan, just to know that their front office didn’t think enough of that player who meant so much to them.

I wasn’t that attached to LT, like he wasn’t my all-time favorite player. But hey, he was San Diego football. Everyone looked up to him, and he was one of the greatest guys ever to play Chargers football. And he was here for NINE years! It didn’t really matter if you had another player on the team who was your favorite, LT was like an automatic favorite.

I’m telling you people, this is the exactly same situation as the Trevor Hoffman situation. I remember being so frustrated with people after he got released because everyone seemed to care more about LT then Trevor, saying that LT was the better person and player. I used to even resent LT a little because he seemed to be a lot more popular than Trevor. I know that there were a lot of huge Trevor fans out there and that a lot of people were very upset when he left the team, but I wasn’t really seeing it as much as I saw, “oh my goodness, we need to keep LT!”

But both of these situations are exactly the same. Player gets older, but still can play phenomenaly, is a huge icon to the fans and to the city, and the front office doesn’t want to spare the money to keep him, so they just kick him out. It was like that with Trevor last year, and it’s like that this week with LT. It makes you very, very angry at the front office.

I was a huge fan of Trevor Hoffman. I was outraged at the way the front office disposed of him. Man. I was not happy at all that they didn’t even try to get him back. It was absolutely horrible. I understand that this is a business, but I don’t believe that it’s a good business decision to kick out a freaking icon!

So anyways, then Adrian has to come out with this little whining speech about how we have to win a championship or pay him the money he deserves or else he’s outta here.

adrian.jpgI totally understand that he wants more money. A player of his caliber deserves a lot more than he’s getting right now. And I’m sure he’s thinking about his family and his foundation and stuff like that. I don’t think that he’s demanding the money just to be selfish, but he does have a right to. He should be getting much, much more right now. But I also know that at this point, the Padres probably aren’t going to be willing to part with the money that he should be getting. So, Adrian’s probably heading out the door.

If we’re not over .500 by the second half of the season, he’s going to get traded. If we can stay above .500 and be somewhere near first place, I’ll think the Padres will risk keeping him so that we can make a push towards the playoffs. I guess we’ll just have to see how this team pulls together and how they do in the first half.

But the point is, THANKS A LOT ADRIAN!! This is just what we needed to lift our spirits this week and to have a happy outlook on the season!

Like I said about LT, Adrian’s like an automatic favorite for the Padres fan. He’s an amazing player and a great person. But we have to win the World Series this year, or else he’s gone. But you know what, I have a feeling that even if we did win the World Series this year (right), Adrian would still be out the door. We just can’t afford him.

So enjoy having Adrian here for the next few months. ‘Cause he’s not going to be here much longer.

EIGHT MORE DAYS!! WHOOHOOO!!

Spring Training Countdown: 9 Days!!!!

NINE DAYS PEOPLE!!!! Nine days until our boys are finally, finally back in action!!!

So last night I was trying to think of something that I could talk about that had to do with the number nine for this entry. For some reason, the fact that there are nine players on the baseball field and the ninth player is the right fielder got into my head. Yes, I must have been half asleep. But whatever. Today I’m going to talk about the ninth player on the field, the right fielder.

This year’s whole outfield situation is going to be interesting this year. And so is the right field situation. Right now, I would say that Will Venable is our right fielder. Or Kyle Blanks.

The outfield looks like Tony Gwynn, Scott Hairston, Will, and Kyle right now. Argh. I’m so mad that Chase is at third. Anyways, Buddy Black said something interesting last week. He said that the outfield situation is more of a shuffling/sharing situation than platooning. I think he meant that all the outfielders are going an equal amount of playing time.

So it’s going to be very interesting to see how that works out. It’s going to be interesting to see how this whole team works out!

One thing I’m really thankful for about this team this year is that we have a very good idea of what the team is going to look like. We don’t have the bullpen or rotation uncertainties that we had in Spring Training last year. We know what our infield and outfield are going to look like. The bench isn’t completely settled, but we have an idea. The only thing we really have to worry about is what this team is going to do this season.

My expectations for this team are very low. I’m not saying that I expect them to do badly, but that I’m not having any expectations at all. I’m just going to wait and see how things work out. Last year was up and down. I certainly didn’t expect that we would do as well as we did. I’m going to let the boys surprise me. And whatever happens, it’s baseball.

GO PADRES!!! ONLY NINE DAYS!!!!

Spring Training Countdown: 10 Days!!!

According to my calculations, there are only ten more days until the first *official* San Diego Padres Spring Training game! Of course, there’s the charity game on the 4th, but that’s not *official.* I won’t be able to listen to it because they don’t usually broadcast it. SO, we have ten days until we get to finally hear some real Padres baseball. I can’t wait.

That day is always so much fun. Two years ago I remember locking myself in my room with a bottle of water and a protein bar. Or maybe that was last year. Whichever it was, that first game is always the best. It’s been a looooong time since I’ve heard the voices of Ted or Jerry or Andy calling a ballgame, and it’s sooo good to get back.

Baseball is the best game ever. And I’m soooo happy that it’s finally coming back. I can’t wait to hear a game getting called. That first game back is always the best.

ONLY TEN DAYS!!!

How ‘Bout That Front Office??

So, how’s this front office doing so far? If any of you read my blog a year ago, during that awful offseason, you know that I was really, really upset with the front office. It was not pretty. I was ripping into them almost every day, mostly because of the horrible Trevor Hoffman separation, which I really hope doesn’t happen with LT. That situation with Trevor was handled terribly by the front office. It was embarrassing, in fact. Oh my goodness, it was just really bad.

So I was not happy with John Moores and Kevin Towers and Sandy Alderson at this point. It felt like we were under a dictatorship that didn’t care about the fans, like at all. You have no idea how happy I was when I found out that Jeff Moorad was going to buy the club. I was also very happy when Towers got fired and we hired Jed Hoyer. At that point, anything was better than what we had before. It didn’t really matter if these guys turned out to be worse; we just needed something new.

And so far, I like what I see.

Of course, I don’t agree with the Kevin Kouzmanoff trade, but you know what, things are changing for the good. I think that the fact that things are changing is a great sign for the future of this organization. We haven’t been as big as some teams in the free-agent market this offseason, but we’ve made some big moves, like the signings of Jerry Hairston and Jon Garland, and soon, hopefully Yorvit Torrealba. These aren’t the biggest names, but they’re fairly well-known, and as a fan, it’s really exciting to actually recognize the names of these players!

sd.gifOne thing that I’ve really noticed is the use of the “SD” logo a lot more. I remember reading an article where Jeff Moorad said that he wanted to use the logo a lot more and make SD a thing like LA. I don’t know why, but I’m always really thrilled when I see an “SD” used on the website and stuff ’cause it’s got Jeff Moorad written all over it. It’s also exciting because he said that he wanted to use it more and now they are. That shows that they’re really going through with what they said they were going to do.

Like in the FanFest information, I noticed this line: “Wear your Padres blue to show your SD pride and win prizes.” Very interesting.
By the way, the FanFest is going to be a fantastic event this year. It’s been pretty good is years past, but this is going to be huge. That’s another thing that the front office is really doing well on. It’s going to be an amazing day, and it’s for free too! I’m really, really excited :)

The front office is doing great. They’re making changes, generating excitement among the fans, and hopefully, building a World-Series-caliber team.

Last week I went to Sports Authority, and guess what I found? A $120 Padres jersey on clearance for $10!!! I was sooo happy!! I love a deal :)

Oh yeah, so we’re supposed to sign Yorvit Torrealba sometime soon. I wanted the Padres to get this guy a while back. I don’t remember exactly when it was, but I thought he would be a good fit here. I remember that last year he was like a Padres killer. It was most annoying. Hopefully we will be able to get this guy locked up soon. I think he will be a great mentor to Nick Hundley, and also a great asset behind the plate.

Dude, it’s seriously less than two weeks until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training! I can’t WAIT!! I miss baseball so much right now. I can’t wait for those long summer nights listening to some great Padres baseball. And this is going to be a great year, I’m sure of it. We probably won’t get anywhere, with San Diego’s luck, but hey, as long as we play some great ball, I’m sure it’ll be a great season. Stupid Chargers.

Check out the Big League Stew Padres Blogbook

And by the way, if you haven’t seen To Save A Life yet, go see it. Now.

GO PADRES!!! MISS YOU KOUZ!!!!
