February 2011

WE’RE BACK!!!!!

Your San Diego Padres played their first game of 2011 today against the Seattle Mariners.

It was the annual charity game, a game played the same time each year against the same team. We didn’t win, but man, we were playing baseball. It was about time.

It was actually a pretty good game by first-game-of-the-year standards. A bunch of guys pitched, and bunch of guys got hits and scored runs.

Some highlights included Nick Hundley, who had two hits and drove in five runs. One of those hits was a grand slam, which at the time, pulled us in front of Seattle for an 8-7 lead. It was so sweet.

Brad Hawpe, Chase Headley, and Luis Durango had two hits each, which is great.

On the pitching side, it’s no surprise that we gave up 13 runs. Tim Staffer threw 1.2 innings and gave up five runs. Cory Luebke and Luke Gregerson got some time in, and a whole bunch of other guys too.

It was really sad because we had a 12-10 lead in the top of the ninth, but the Mariners hit a two-run homer and tied the game. Former Padre Josh Bard hit a single in the top of the 10th to win the game. Oh well.

It’s the first game of the spring. I’m just soooooo excited that we’re back. We’ve got so much to prove, but we’ve got so much potential.

I haven’t heard any baseball since October 3rd. That awful day when we weren’t quite able to defeat the Giants. It’s been a long offseason, but I’m just so happy that it’s over. It’s over. We’re back. I kept very busy during that little break, and now we’re back to normal. I’m so excited about this upcoming season. So so so so so excited. It’s going to be an amazing year.

GO PADRES!!!!

First Rant of the Season 2011

We’re not even two weeks into Spring Training, and already, the Padres odds of winning the World Series are 100-1.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

This is what I absolutely hate the most about the beginning of the season. We’re at the beginning of the season for goodness sakes!! How can anyone, anyone know what’s going to happen 163 games from now? I hate predictions, one, because we really can’t know. We just can’t. There’s no way that we can predict all the millions of variables that happen during a Major League Baseball season. And two, everybody always picks the Padres to end in the bottom of the NL West. Always. I don’t even think there’s a reason, except that everyone is under the assumption that the Padres stink!

Sure, we have before. 2008 was the WORST YEAR EVER!!! And, no, we’ve never won a World Series. But this is ridiculous. Did last year not teach you anything? We were picked by everybody, as usual, to finish dead last. But look where we were ALL SEASON LONG!!!! We were the First-Place Padres for the majority of the season. And it wasn’t just because the other teams didn’t have it together. We had to fight to stay in the top. We fought so hard for that spot, and it was ripped away from us at the very last second.

Sure, we did fall down at the end there. But who cares??? We proved everybody wrong for an entire season!!!!! We earned that number one spot. We were soooo close. We should have had that. We didn’t. We failed again. But we showed that we could fight. We showed that we weren’t the pathetic stereotype that everyone always thinks we are. We are a historically losing team, sure, but each season is a new slate. All teams are equal at the beginning of the season. The Yankees haven’t won the World Series yet. The Phillies or the Red Sox haven’t won the World Series yet. The Padres haven’t won the World Series yet. So we can’t just assume that the Padres are going to be in the cellar once again.

And don’t you dare put us in the bottom of the NL West just because the Giants won the World Series. We held them down all season, and they caught us in a weak spot. Just because they won it all last year DOES NOT mean that they’re going to have to same success this year.

The same can be said for my Padres. Who knows if we’ll be half as good as we were last year? We just don’t know. We might completely lose it and all of our talent might go down the drain. Or they might be better than anyone ever hoped.

Just give us a chance.

GO PADRES!!!

Padres FanFest 2011 :)

Yesterday was FanFest, and it was so much fun!!!

It was the getting there though, that was not fun.

IMG_0079.JPGSomeone annoyingly decided to schedule the air show on Coronado on the same day as FanFest. My family and I decided to leave our house around 8 so that we would get downtown around 9. Around 8:40 a.m., we got stuck in the worst traffic that I’ve ever seen. At 10:40, we were finally able to break free and get to our exit. The most frustrating part about it was that we were probably 1 1/2-2 miles away from our exit when we got stuck. Uggghhh.

But, we did make it with plenty of time to see all the attractions at FanFest. I really enjoyed it, but I think next year the Padres need to bring in some more features.

I was shocked at how many people there were, especially since it seemed like the whole city was heading to Coronado (there were actually 70,000 people at the air show!!!!). But there were long lines at Petco for the Garage Sale and the clubhouse tour.

I’ve been to the Garage Sale three years now, and it’s so funny to see some of the same stuff coming out every year! A lot of the old commemorative baseballs have been trying to sell for years, but I doubt  that many people are very interested in those.

I didn’t find much, but I did get a “5” patch that potentially could have been on Kouz’s jersey had he stayed with the Padres. Sniff sniff. I also bought a Western Metal Theater shirt, mostly because it was only $3.

I got Clayton Richard and Mike Adams’ autographs, which was pretty cool.

IMG_0101.JPGI got to talk to Friarhood, RJ’s Fro, Jane Mitchell, and various other fans. And of course, my Padres buddy Hyun Young. We passed out some blog cards and cupcakes and cake pops that we made ourselves. Mine got really squished, but whatever. It’s the taste that counts.

I also sat in on the Leadership Forum, which featured Dick Enberg and Tom Garfinkel. It was really interesting hearing the questions from the fans and the thoughts of both of these guys. I am especially excited about a game this year where Trevor Hoffman is going to be honored. It’s going to be sweet!!

I was super happy to get out to Petco Park again. It had been way too long, and it was so much fun to see sooo many Padres fans out there. They ended up having over 21,000 people there!!!!!

I can’t wait for baseball season to start. I have a feeling that this Padres team is going to be AMAZING.

Shoutouts!!

Today is Hyun Young’s birthday!!!! Happy birthday Padres buddy!!!! You are amazing :)

And, big shoutout to my sports editor and fellow Padres fan, Matt, who I assist on Palomar College’s newspaper, The Telescope. If you have any complaints about this blog, send them to him. Just kidding :) And if you love Palomar sports, the Watercooler, our sports blog, is the place to find all Comets sports coverage.

GO PADRES!!!

Almost Time For FanFest…

Only a few more hours until FanFest!!! I’m so excited :)

I just wanted to let you all know that you need to find Hyun Young and I tomorrow, because we have some very special treats for you. Yeah, I know, we’re great.

I’m going to be wearing my Adrian jersey, and I’ll have Adrian’s Red Sox mug shot taped to one sleeve, and a very cute picture of Kouz on the other. It’s going to be SWEET.

I really hope that I’ll get to meet a lot of you guys tomorrow. Don’t be shy!

See you all tomorrow!!

GO PADRES!!!!!

Only Two Days Till FanFest!!

I am soooo excited about FanFest!!! I can’t believe that it’s only two days away. I’m going to have so much fun, and I’m so happy that I get to go to Petco Park this weekend. Best place ever.

Even though it’s pretty much the same events as last year, I’m still super excited to get out there and recharge my fanhood. It’s been way too long since I’ve seen any baseball, and this is pretty much a celebration of our boys getting ready to get out there and win a title for us.

Hyun Young and I are really hoping to get Mat Latos’ autograph. Out of all the guys on our team, this is one of the most amazing rising stars, and I feel like his autograph is going to be worth a lot someday. I would say that he’s the next Jake Peavy but…look how he turned out.

I’m also excited to see the clubhouse again. I’ve taken the tour twice, but it still has the awe of the first time. Just thinking about the kind of legends that have stood in that clubhouse, like Trevor Hoffman and Kevin Kouzmanoff. Just to think that my baby spent a ton of time in that room…wow. It makes me want to scream or faint or something. That is a very special place.

I really hope that there’s a lot of good stuff at the garage sale, too. Last year I got a Kevin Kouzmanoff banner that had been hanging on one of the lampposts (until they traded him of course). It’s super cool, and I hope that I can find more Kouz stuff and anything else interesting.

And of course, the best part about FanFest is meeting up with other fans who are just as crazy about the Padres as I am! I hope to meet and re-meet a ton of people this year, including but not limited to Hyun Young, John, Gaslamp Ball people, RJ’s Fro people, Twitter people, and Friarhood people. Especially since Hyun Young and I have a very special plan.

I can’t wait. It’s going to be such a fun day!!

GO PADRES!!!!!

Top Five :D

You guys are awesome.

Just sayin’.

In January’s Latest Leader’s list, Unfinished Business is #5. I am consistently amazed and humbled by the way you guys read my blog. All I can say is THANK YOU. Thank you for wanting to hear the rants about the Padres from one girl. Thank you for your support of me and this blog. I never imagined where this would go when I made it 2 1/2 years ago. I hope that I will be able to continue to write about my boys for you guys for a long time.

And of course, I must dedicate this ranking to my boy :)

kooozie.jpgBe still my heart. Oh wow.

Seriously. That guy is way too cute.

ANYWAYS, we are ridiculously close to pitchers and catchers reporting. I’m soooo excited!! I was just thinking the other day how much I miss baseball. I’m usually so busy during the offseason that I barely notice that baseball is gone, which is a good thing, but I’m SOO excited that it’s coming back. It’s been waaaaay too long.

But before everyone heads out to Spring Training, we’ve got Fan Fest in a week. I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to make it. There’s some technical details that need to be worked out, but if all goes well, I will be out there at my second home, Petco Park, in a week. By the way, I’m planning to wear my Adrian jersey, but I will definitely have Kouz on my sleeve. Maybe I’ll use the picture above. It’s just waaaaay too cute. Whew.

Well, thank you guys again so much!!!!
