It’s Only the First Game
- 4-1 Dodgers
Well, it wasn’t the best Opening Day ever. It wasn’t the most well-played game for the Padres, but I saw some things that signal hope for this team.
Jake Peavy started, going seven innings. He gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with eight stikeouts. In the first inning, when he gave up two runs, he was not very sharp. He went 1-2-3 in the second, but gave up one run in each of the third and the seventh. He wasn’t the sharpest, but I thought he did a pretty good job. I am very glad that he went seven innings. The bullpen is very fresh now. It’s a very good thing that he went so deep into the game.
The two guys who pitched from the bullpen were very good. Luke Gregerson and Edward Mujica threw scoreless innings.
We got our one and only run in the bottom of the first. Jody Gerut double off the first pitch he saw. David Eckstein moved him over with a sacrifice, and Brian Giles drove him in with a ground-out. We only had five hits, but we left seven runners on. At one point we left the bases loaded. It was not very good. But I have hope for these hitters. Eckstein had some excellent at-bats, though he only had one hit and one walk. Adrian Gonzalez walked twice. But my boy Kouz had a bad night. He came up in two critical do-or-die situations and he died both times. Oh well.
I’m not upset, angry, or devastated about this game. Disappointed, sure, but I’m not ready to jump off a bridge or anything. It’s only the first game of the season! One loss, and people are already comparing this year to last year! Peoples, it’s only the first game!! We’ve still got 161 ahead of us. I saw positive things in the game last night. Face it, the Dodgers were really good. We were shut down by their pitching. I know we will be better than this.
Yesterday’s game was attended by the largest crowd in Petco Park’s history, at 45,496. I think that is so cool! Sure, a lot of the crowd was Dodgers fans, but still. We just came off a 99-loss season and we draw the biggest crowd in Petco Park ever!!
Tonight we are playing the Dodgers for the second of four games this week. Chris Young will be starting against Randy Wolf. And guess what…I’m going to the game!!
Kind of a weird situation of how we’re going, but basically a friend offered to take my sister and me to the game last night, but we couldn’t get tickets (at least we got beat out by the biggest crowd in Petco Park history!), so we’re going tonight instead. My friend is sort of a Dodgers supporter, so it’s going to be a lot of fun! My goal is to convert him into a Padres fan. It’s going to be so much fun!
I’ve been to a Dodgers/Padres game before, it was my very first baseball game ever! But I wasn’t “concious” of the meaning and the rivalry. But that game did kindle my hate of the Dodgers because 1) the won, and 2) they got the winning run off of Trevor. This time, it’s going to be a lot of fun to experience the rivalry and scream like crazy. My throat’s already sore in anticipation!
This friend, who is like an older brother to my sister and me, is an incredibly gracious man. He doesn’t really like baseball, but he knows how much this means to me, so he’s taking us anyway (though he’s trying to make us think it’s only because the Dodgers are playing that he offered to take us). Even though he isn’t a big fan of the Dodgers (he’s a football/basketball guy), he still pretends to really like them. Since he is sitting on the fence and it not a die-hard Dodgers fan, I have hope to convert him to the Friars!
Also, he’s not feeling the best, but he’s going to suck it up and go anyway! What a trooper! He is a really great guy, and my sister and I thank him so much for taking us tonight! I know we’re going to have a lot of fun. Even if my “brother from another mother” and I are going at it all night! Haha! GO PADRES!!
It’s going to be a lot of fun. Of course, I will be taking a lot of pictures. I hoping the break the 300 mark today. Yeah, 300 pictures should be enough. GO PADRES!!!
