Vizquel interested in Padres
So, it looks like shortstop Omar Vizquel will soon be a Padre. He’s pretty old, but he has a lot of experience and he seems like a good defensive player. If he can stay solid at short and give us 15 or so homers, I think he will be OK. It looks like a deal will get done as soon as the end of the week.
Otherwise, a thing is going around the blogosphere that Jimmy over at Baseball, The Yankees and Life started. And that is the dedication of their numbers in the Latest Leaders to a player. My number this time was #23, and I am dedicating that to Adrian Gonzalez, who is also #23.
Adrian is the Padres’ first baseman right now. He had a great, great year in 2008, not to mention earning a Gold Glove. He was also in the All-Star game, and did pretty well. He’s been pretty amazing in the last few years. He will definitely win the Padres’ MVP. I look forward to seeing him continue his success in the next few years.
Meanwhile, I’m just waiting for Spring Training. We need baseball!
Omar may be getting up there in years, but he’s an awesome player. Totally sure-handed at short. The Padres could do much worse.

Jimmy had a great idea on dedicating our ranking to a player wearing our number. I blogged today on the retired Red Sox #4.

Kaybee,
We do need baseball! I like this whole tradition of dedicating our numbers to our players! I think it’s great! Adrian Gonzalez is a great player!! I think Vizquel will do fine as a Padre too, good defensive short stop, and I hope his numbers will hold up!

Congrats! It’s cool that your number is 23 and so is Adrian. I think Omar Vizquel should be our shortstop this season, even though he’s freaking old. Oh well. He’s a well-experienced guy.
Oh by the way, I’m not a he. I’m a she! And my name is spelled Hyun Young π

Adrian Gonzalez is a great player. He’s young and very underrated. He’s your future there in San Diego!
Oh…and BTW, he needs 3 more homers (as noted on my website http://www.happyyoungster.com under “milestone tracker”) to reach #100 for his career.
If I catch it, I’ll get something for you π

I’m kind of excited about this because I love Omar. The Giants are my NL team, and Omar has been a Giant since 2005. Although if the Padres keep getting former Giants players, I might have a second-favorite NL team since I live here now! Although he’s getting up in age, he’s still a pretty good player. The Padres need someone to give their fans some hope this season.

JANE, I’m sure we would do worse, but thankfully Vizquel is available!
JULIA, yeah, that was a great entry!
ELIZABETH, thanks! I hope he does do well.
HYUN YOUNG, sorry about that π
HAPPY, I didn’t realize that! Thanks π
I don’t get the Omar deal at all to be honest. Yes he can bring veteran leadership but the guy is near the end of his career more than likely. He hit .246 and .222 the last two years. He had a great year defensively last year but he has a career .984 fielding percentage. So why not give a young guy a shot from the farm team?

I think this would be a fantastic move by San Diego.
